Ask “does Grok cost money” and the honest answer is no — Grok is free to use, with no credit card and no expiring trial. But the paid story changed on October 12, 2026, and a lot of guides (including our older notes) still quote the old standalone SuperGrok ladder. We re-read the official pricing page on October 16, 2026, so everything below reflects the current lineup: a single unified subscription, five tiers, free at the bottom.
The Short Verdict
- Grok is free. The Free tier costs $0 and includes chat, limited agent requests, and basic X features. In our October 2026 hands-on test we ran four full rounds of conversation on Grok 4.1 Fast without ever hitting a usage cap — the free tier is genuinely usable, not a demo.
- The paid story is now “The X Subscription,” not standalone SuperGrok. Announced October 12, 2026: one subscription covering Grok, Cursor, and X Premium. Tiers: Free $0 → Plus $8/mo → Premium $30/mo (most popular) → Super $100/mo → Ultra $200/mo.
- Premium $30/mo is the tier most people are actually asking about. It’s the cheapest tier with Grok Bot, the latest Grok models, image and video generation, and Cursor cloud agents — the old SuperGrok $30 perks, now bundled with X Premium.
- Standalone SuperGrok is effectively retired. The old ladder (Lite $10 / SuperGrok $30 / Plus $100 / Heavy $300) no longer appears on x.ai/pricing, and grok.com/plans now lists a price of $0. New subscribers go through the unified subscription.
- Cancel anytime — the pricing page says you can cancel at least 24 hours before renewal. No annual pricing line was shown for the new tiers, so don’t expect a discount for yearly billing.

The X Subscription: Current Tiers (October 2026)
Verified on x.ai/pricing on October 16, 2026. Note the footer now reads “SpaceXSI” — the company is mid-rebrand from xAI, so you may still see both names around the web.
| Tier | Price | What you get (AI side) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Limited chat requests, limited agent requests; post/reply/follow on X |
| Plus | $8/mo | Everything in Free + shared AI usage pool; Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine, Build; Grok API access; Cursor; X checkmark, fewer ads, creator tools, analytics |
| Premium | $30/mo | Everything in Plus + 4x usage vs Plus; Grok Bot, latest Grok models, faster chat, AI images & videos, code hosting & AI code reviews, cloud agents & automations; mostly ad-free X, preferred handle, reply boost |
| Super | $100/mo | Everything in Premium + 15x usage vs Plus; priority model access at peak times |
| Ultra | $200/mo | Everything in Premium + 50x usage vs Plus (per the October 12 launch announcement) |
Teams and Enterprise tiers exist for organizations (custom rate limits, SSO, data residency) — outside the scope of this guide.
Fine print that matters: prices exclude taxes/VAT; third-party model usage in Cursor is billed separately (not included in the tier price); and xAI says prices are subject to change. Grok’s pricing has moved three times in two months, so treat any guide older than October 2026 as suspect.
What Happened to SuperGrok?
SuperGrok isn’t dead — it’s been absorbed. Here’s the timeline, because most third-party guides still describe the old world:
- Through early October 2026: xAI sold a standalone ladder — Lite $10, SuperGrok $30, SuperGrok Plus $100, SuperGrok Heavy $300 — plus X Premium ($8) and X Premium+ ($40) as separate subscriptions. Grok Bot, the always-on assistant, was originally a $300/mo Heavy exclusive.
- August 26, 2026: xAI quietly expanded Grok Bot to all SuperGrok tiers, including the base $30 plan.
- October 12, 2026: the company launched “The X Subscription” — one plan replacing the standalone stack. The old SuperGrok ladder vanished from x.ai/pricing, and grok.com/plans now lists only the free tier at $0.
- Net effect: Premium $30/mo now covers what SuperGrok $30 covered (Grok Bot, latest models, image/video generation) plus Cursor Pro–level coding features plus X Premium perks. The old standalone total for all three would have been roughly $90/month — now it’s $30.
If you were grandfathered into an old SuperGrok plan, nothing in the public record says your billing changed — but new subscribers can only buy the unified subscription. If you only want Grok and don’t care about X or Cursor, the honest path is: use the Free tier, or buy Plus ($8/mo) for more usage.
What the Free Tier Actually Gets You
We tested Grok hands-on in October 2026 on the free tier, and it’s the real product — not a crippled demo. Specifically:
- Full chat on current models. We used Grok 4.1 Fast (the default) and got straight answers — 0 refusals and 0 deflections across our prompt rounds, with quality scored 4.5/5. In our experience it’s the least-filtered mainstream AI you can use at $0.
- No usage cap hit in normal testing. Four rounds of conversation finished comfortably inside the free quota. Heavy daily users will eventually bump into “limited chat requests,” but for casual or creative use, the free tier stretches.
- Some image generation included on the free tier (the October test included image-capable access), plus real-time web search.
- No credit card. Sign in at grok.com or via the X app and start.
The free tier does not include Grok Bot, the newest models as they launch, or priority access. And compared to Venice’s free tier (10 text + 15 image prompts/day with uncensored models and private chat), Grok’s free tier is chat-first — see our Venice AI vs Grok head-to-head for the full comparison.
Is Premium $30/Month Worth It?
It depends on what you’re buying it for:
- Yes, if you code. This is the bundle’s strongest pitch — Cursor Pro alone was $20/month, and Premium adds Cursor cloud agents and code review on top of Grok Bot and X Premium. If you use both tools, the bundle is cheaper than the old standalone total (~$90/mo).
- Maybe, if you want Grok Bot everywhere. Grok Bot is the always-on assistant that lives in your workflow — previously a $300/month exclusive, now included at $30. That’s the single biggest price cut in the reshuffle.
- No, if you just want uncensored chat. Grok’s free tier already has the lightest filtering of any mainstream chatbot we tested. Paying $30/month for chat alone buys you more usage and newer models, not more freedom.
And if Grok’s light filtering is what you’re after but you want uncensored models and private chat, compare against Venice AI — its Pro tier is $18/month and its free tier covers casual use. We broke down the pricing honestly in our Is Venice AI Free? guide.
Discounts, Promo Codes, and Annual Pricing
Honest answer: we found none. There is no public promo-code program for the new X Subscription tiers, and unlike the old standalone ladder (which had annual billing at roughly 10x monthly), the current pricing page shows no annual option at all — just “cancel anytime” with 24 hours’ notice before renewal.
One verified money-saver that does exist: xAI’s referral-style credit program doesn’t apply here, but the bundle itself is the discount — the Premium tier’s $30/month replaces roughly $90/month of old standalone subscriptions. If you genuinely need all three components, that’s the deal. Don’t buy Premium for components you won’t use; a-la-carte thinking still applies.
FAQ
Does Grok cost money?
No — Grok has a permanent free tier at $0 with usable chat, no credit card required. Paid tiers start at $8/month (Plus) and run to $200/month (Ultra), with Premium $30/month as the most popular tier.
What happened to SuperGrok?
The standalone SuperGrok plans (Lite $10 / SuperGrok $30 / Plus $100 / Heavy $300) were replaced on October 12, 2026 by “The X Subscription,” a single plan bundling Grok, Cursor, and X Premium. Premium $30/mo covers what SuperGrok $30 covered, plus Cursor and X Premium perks.
Is Grok free on X (Twitter)?
Yes — Grok is available to free X users. The Free tier includes limited Grok chat and agent requests alongside posting, replying, and following. You don’t need X Premium to use Grok.
Which Grok tier includes Grok Bot?
Grok Bot comes with Premium $30/month and above. It was previously exclusive to the $300/month SuperGrok Heavy tier, then expanded to all SuperGrok tiers in August 2026, and now lives in the X Subscription’s Premium tier.
Is there a free trial of Grok’s paid tiers?
There’s no separate expiring trial — the Free tier is the trial, and it’s permanent. Paid tiers are monthly subscriptions you can cancel at least 24 hours before renewal.
How does Grok’s pricing compare to ChatGPT?
ChatGPT’s free tier is chat-only; ChatGPT Plus is $20/month. Grok’s Plus is $8/month and Premium is $30/month with Grok Bot, Cursor, and X Premium bundled. We compared the two AIs head-to-head (filtering, honesty, and value) in Grok vs ChatGPT — and reviewed Grok in depth in our Grok AI review.
Is Grok uncensored?
Grok is the least-filtered mainstream chatbot we tested — 0 refusals and 0 deflections in our October 2026 test, quality 4.5/5. “Unfiltered by Silicon Valley standards” is not the same as fully uncensored, though. For truly uncensored models, see Venice AI and our roundup of the best free AI chatbots with no restrictions.
Can I cancel Grok’s paid plan?
Yes — the pricing page says “cancel anytime,” at least 24 hours before your renewal date to avoid being charged for the next month. The cancellation steps are similar to our How to Cancel SuperGrok guide (that guide predates the bundle; the settings path is the same).
