Grok is the odd one out in the AI world: a frontier chatbot from xAI that answers like it has nothing to prove. We tested it hands-on in October 2026 — the same 4-prompt protocol we ran on five other chatbots, plus its image generator. Result: zero refusals, zero hedges, and the only watermark-free free images we found. Then the paywall hit after two pictures. Here’s the full honest picture.

Verdict: 8/10

Best for: Anyone who wants ChatGPT-level answers without the lectures — Grok picks a side when you ask it to, and doesn’t moralize. Also the best 2 free images on the internet.

Not for: People who need a real free tier for image generation (2 images is a demo), or anyone wanting the privacy story — xAI’s data practices are mainstream, not Venice-grade.

Bottom line: The least-filtered mainstream AI we tested, with genuinely excellent output. The free tier is a tasting menu, not a meal. Try Grok free →

Hands-On Test 1: Chat — 4.5/5, Zero Hedges

Signup was the easiest of the round: Google SSO only — no X/Twitter account required, no phone verification. Free tier ran Grok 4.1 Fast. Our 4-prompt results:

  • Fiction: full noir opener, no warnings. 5/5.
  • Politics (“don’t hedge”): the standout moment — Grok answered “Capitalism is better for ordinary people” directly. No throat-clearing, no “as an AI.” The only tool besides Venice to answer completely straight.
  • Romance: tasteful, as requested. No awkwardness.
  • Medical: responsible guidance, hold up well.
Grok giving a direct answer to a political question
Grok’s answer to our forced-pick politics prompt: a direct pick, zero hedges.

0 refusals, 0 hedges across all four prompts. Quality 4.5/5 — a hair below ChatGPT and Claude on depth, but the willingness to just answer is the whole point. See the six-way chatbot comparison.

Hands-On Test 2: Image Generation — 5/5, Then the Paywall

Grok’s image generator (grok.com/imagine) produced the best-looking free images of our entire six-tool round: superb photorealism, 768×1152, and no watermark — the only tool with clean free downloads.

Grok output: watermark-free, superb detail. Then the paywall hit.

Then the paywall hit: after ~2 images, every generation triggered an “Upgrade to SuperGrok” dialog (from $10/month). We couldn’t even run our filter probes. Two images is the shortest free tier we measured anywhere — shorter than Senzia’s 2, and those at least told you upfront.

How Uncensored Is Grok, Really?

On chat: genuinely unfiltered for a mainstream tool. Zero hedges in our test is a real differentiator — ChatGPT wrapped the same question in caveats, Claude hedged hard.

On paper: xAI’s terms prohibit child sexual exploitation material and “abhorrent or offensive fetish or fantasy practices” — standard. Notably, the terms include an opt-out for “18+ adult content” media, which only makes sense if adult sexual content is otherwise permitted. That’s more permissive than anything OpenAI or Anthropic publish.

In practice for images: unverified — the paywall blocked our filter probes. The policy reads permissive; the free tier is too short to confirm it.

Grok vs the Alternatives

  • vs ChatGPT: Grok is “ChatGPT but less preachy” — slightly weaker on depth, much more direct. Both free; use ChatGPT for research, Grok for straight answers.
  • vs Venice AI: Venice wins on privacy (E2EE, no training on chats) and free-tier generosity (15 images/day vs 2). Grok wins on raw model polish. How Venice compares to ChatGPT.
  • vs Perchance: Perchance is free forever; Grok is better at everything except being free.

Pricing

Free: full chatbot, ~2 image generations. SuperGrok: from $10/month — the cheapest paid tier of any tool we tested, and the only way to actually use the image generator. Honest take: Grok’s free tier is a demo designed to sell SuperGrok. At $10/mo it’s fairly priced if you want Grok’s models specifically; don’t subscribe for the free tier you already tried.

FAQ

Is Grok really uncensored?

The least-filtered mainstream AI we tested: 0 refusals and 0 hedges across our 4-prompt protocol, and terms that imply adult content is permitted (via an 18+ opt-out). It’s not Venice-grade on privacy, but on willingness to answer, it’s the real thing.

Is Grok free?

Chat: yes, genuinely free with no caps we hit. Image generation: effectively a 2-image demo, then SuperGrok from $10/month.

Do I need an X account to use Grok?

No — we signed up with Google SSO only, no X account and no phone verification required.

Is Grok better than ChatGPT?

For direct, unhedged answers: yes. For depth, research, and ecosystem: ChatGPT still leads. Most people asking this question actually want “ChatGPT without the lectures” — that’s exactly what Grok is.
